About Capitol Market

Capitol Market is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a true Charleston gem. Operating seven days a week at a historic 51,000-square-foot, indoor/outdoor retail space on the National Register of Historic Places, we bring together nine year-round indoor tenants, dozens of seasonal farmers, a daily pop-up vendor program, and a robust SNAP benefits program. Our mission is simple: support small businesses, celebrate West Virginia agriculture, and tackle food insecurity head-on.

About the Role

We are seeking a high-energy storyteller and event planner to grow Capitol Market, champion our vendors, and design memorable experiences that delight our visitors. As the Director of Marketing and Events, you will own the look, feel, and voice of Capitol Market. Working with a dedicated team, you will lead our marketing campaigns, digital communications, and signature community events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Build the game plan: Design and execute our comprehensive marketing and digital strategy.
  • Create great content: Highlight our vendors, farmers, seasonal produce, and market products across social media, newsletters, and web.
  • Keep messaging consistent: Protect and elevate Capitol Market’s brand voice across all public touchpoints.
  • Own the calendar: Plan, schedule, and run Capitol Market’s signature events and community programming.
  • Run the show: Handle day-to-day event logistics, setup, budgeting, timelines, and post-event analysis.
  • Manage pop-up vendors: Coordinate the pop-up program end-to-end, including applications, communications, guidelines, and scheduling.
  • Cultivate relationships: Build collaborative partnerships with indoor tenants, farmers, volunteers, sponsors, community leaders, and the Board of Directors.

Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • 3–5+ years of experience leading marketing campaigns, managing social channels, and/or executing events.
  • Strong project management, scheduling, and budgeting capabilities.
  • Exceptional written, visual, and verbal communication skills (newsletters, social media, press releases).
  • Proven track record building relationships across diverse teams and community partners.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends during peak seasonal events.

Preferred:

  • Experience in nonprofits, farmers markets, retail, hospitality, tourism, or community-based organizations.
  • Familiarity with West Virginia agriculture, local food access initiatives, or SNAP programming.
  • Grant writing or sponsorship development experience is a plus.
