Welcome to Capitol Market

Come see why Charleston’s year-round Capitol Market is a vibrant part of West Virginia’s capital city. Tucked in a turn-of-the-century train station, the indoor-outdoor market offers an exciting mix of farm goodness and specialty shops. Pick up seasonal goods to enjoy now and WV-made gifts to take home. Enjoy seafood, sushi or just-carved meat from the butcher. Order soup, salad or a sandwich from one of the many lunch hot spots, or pop in to a lively Italian restaurant for a sit-down meal. Grab a coffee while you shop and artisan chocolates, exotic cheeses and wine to enjoy later at home. They’ll remind you of a great day spent at the market!

So here's a true story for you: Three gay guys are sitting at the Capital Market in downtown Charleston, having lunch. They're not bothering anyone, quietly eating food from the Purple Onion, drinking coffee and staring at their phones. Suddenly they're told by a market employee that management has received complaints that they (the gay guys) are hitting on women (!!!!) and the female shoppers "don't feel safe!" The three gay men are told that they have to leave and never come back. When they try to tell the market employee that he's OBVIOUSLY made a mistake about them, they are then berated, verbally abused and told if they don't leave they'll be arrested. Every attempt by the men to explain that the employee is wrong, is met with further slanderous threats ("We'll have your queer asses arrested if you don't leave!" and "We don't want you fags in here anymore!") They are then escorted out the door by the employee and a janitor! And when the men ask the employee why gay men would be hitting on women, the janitor rolls his eyes and says "We don't want your kind here anymore!" and returned back inside. The three guys left in utter bewilderment. And when the market office was contacted to complain about the situation, the men were told "Yeah I know all about it. Don't come back!" (most likely by the same employee that caused the problem in the first place!) So why would three gay guys hit on women? We didn't. Why were we removed? Because a couple bigoted market employees didn't want our "kind" there anymore. Why would ANYONE continue to support a place that allows that kind of behavior by it's employees? I can assure you that as someone who visited the market multiple times per week, I'll never be returning there if they're going to allow their homophobic employees to harass and berate paying customers. It may be 2023, but bigotry and homophobia are alive and well at the Capital Market!

What are prices for a 5’-6’?
